Awarding Process

Nominations

Nominations to the Ellsberg Whistleblower Award are open to all. If you would like to tell us about a whistleblower that might be deserving of the award, let us know via our ONLINE NOMINATIONS PORTAL. You may also nominate yourself.

Necessary criteria for awardees:

  • The confidential information disclosed originated within the whistleblower’s work environment.
  • The disclosed information significantly contributes to contemporary public debates on:
    • Strengthening democracy and human rights, and / or
    • The public’s right to know
  • The illegitimacy of the secrecy must be plausible.
  • The course of the whistleblowing must be verifiable by the jury (e.g. through independent journalistic articles).
  • The whistleblowing was primarily out of altruistic motives.
  • Receiving an award must be in the interest of the whistleblower.
